Pinterest Anyone?

I am slowly revving my engine on this Teachers Pay Teachers thing and I am determined to make it work.  I re-discovered Pinterest yesterday.  In the past, I have scrolled up and down the oodles and oodles of pages of cool stuff, but now I actually have a log in, boards, pins, and the works.  Today, I was even invited to post on a community board.  Exciting!  I am hoping that while you are here at my blog, you could leave me a comment.  Let me know what you experience has been with Pinterest.  If you have any tips, leave those, too!

Lots of New Items!

Hello Everyone!  I am so excited about these new items I have on Teachers Pay Teachers.  I hope you like them.

This FlySwatter Game is a riot.  I have seen several fly swatters break because of it, but the students are always having a good time.

The activity called "A Closer Look at Your Book"  IS FREE!  It helps students of all ages analyze their reading material through new eyes.  The interact and engage with characters in a way that most book reports don't address.  I like to print 4 per page and put a ring in the corner to make it easy for students to flip through their options.

This K-W-L Reading Skills Combo Packet has everything you need, NO MATTER WHAT GRADE OR SUBJECT YOU TEACH, to help students read and comprehend their text.  They can identify what they KNOW, what they WANT to know, and at the end, what they have LEARNED.

February Buzzer Packet

These are lifesavers.  I love having my student on task as soon as they come into class, almost as much as I love to see them write.  This is a perfect mix.  Buzzers work just like journals or bell work, but with my own twist.  All of the details are in my TpT description, so I won't repeat, but I will show you some of the pages.  Check back for Buzzers for every month, coming soon!

Super Bowl Advertising Strategies Mini Unit

This mini unit is a fabulous way to wrap up football season!  Teach your students to be savvy consumers by being ware of advertising strategies.  This mini unit includes a 22 slide PowerPoint presentation, two student worksheets, and an interactive game to help students review what they have learned.  All game pieces are printable and photos will help guide the assembly.

Here is what the Concentration game looks like.  The font in this PDF is a little different, but this is the main idea.

Here are some tips for putting the game together:
  1. Print and laminate the number cards so they can be reused.
  2. Tape the definitions and terms upside down so when student call out a number, you don't have to remove the number card, you can lift it up and still be able to read it.

Editable Student of the Month Certificates - Pencil & Apple

These certificates make student recognition a snap.  There is one certificate for every month of 2013.  I recommend printing them on white cardstock.  The best part is that they come in two separate formats.  First, the PDF format is wonderful for quickly printing the certificates and hand writing the name of the student who is to be recognized.  The second format is a Word document.  However, you do not have to worry about ruining the formatting because it is protected.  The benefit to this format is that you can click where it says TYPE NAME HERE and enter the student's name in to a text box, then print, sign your name and...VIOA-LA!

Which Fruit are You?

How I Use this Activity:
I use this activity to help students understand that we each have individual character traits, preferences, talents, and desires and that we are not all the same.  This activity helps identify our similarities and differences, and celebrate each!  This is especially handy when preparing for a career.

After completing the exercise, I divide students into groups, based on their results.  I give them a mini size Air-Head or Laffy-Taffy candy that matches their fruit.  For example, the Oranges get orange candy, etc.  The original fruit test lists the fruits of grapes, oranges, bananas and melons.  I adjusted the fruit choices in the document I used, based on the availability of candy flavors.  So, this document contains two sets of the worksheet, both the original and the altered versions.  The altered versions include the following fruits:  blueberries, oranges, apples, and watermelons.

When the students are divided into their like-groups, they discuss whether or not they agree with the results of their test, giving specific examples, such as, “I am definitely an Orange because my mom has always told me that since the time I was small I was always curious and getting into trouble.” Or, “I really don’t think I am a Blueberry because I organize every drawer in the house.”

Then, students divide into new different groups containing one member of each fruit category.  The students then discuss how they feel that the strengths of another fruit can help the weaknesses of other fruits.

After spending 7-10 minutes in each group, students are assigned to write a three-paragraph paper.
Paragraph 1 – What did you learn about yourself from this exercise?
Paragraph 2 – What did you learn about others from this activity?
Paragraph 3 – How will you change or improve your interactions with others based on this exercise?

Looking forward to this!
